Supervisor credentials for Low Intensity CBT
Supervisors play a key role in ensuring high-quality, safe, and effective Low Intensity CBT-informed interventions. All MHWP Supervisors (case Load and clinical skills) must be competent and familiar with the delivery of core MHWP interventions and outcome measures, overseeing caseloads, and maintaining high fidelity to the supervisee’s role while ensuring efficiency and safety in clinical practice. Supervisors must be actively practicing and integrating CBT-informed techniques into their work.
The Clinical Skills Supervisor (CSS) must be a qualified psychological professional with recognised registration in one of the following groups:

- Counselling psychologist
- Forensic psychologist
- Clinical associate in psychology (following at least two years of post-qualification appropriate experience)

- Counsellor (SCoPEd B or C practitioner)
- Adult psychotherapists (SCoPEd C practitioner)

- Mental health and wellbeing practitioner (following at least two years of post-qualification appropriate experience)
The CSS should have training and experience working with adults with severe mental health problems, and an extensive understanding of using interventions based on cognitive behavioural therapy principles in clinical practice with this client group. Clinical Skills Supervisors must fully understand and themselves be able to successfully deliver the interventions that the MHWPs are delivering.
The CSS must have attended recognised MHWP supervision training, aligned to the UCL competence framework for supervision of psychological therapies.
The Caseload Supervisor (CLS) can be any qualified Mental Health professional with training and experience working with adults with severe mental health problems. CLS must evidence UCL Supervision competences and should have training or experience in supervision.
By 1 April 2026 all current CLS in registration applications or re-registration applications should have attended recognised MHWP supervision training.
