Criteria
To apply for MHWP registration, you must meet the following criteria:
- Be a BABCP member.
- Graduate from a British Psychological Society (BPS) accredited MHWP training programme or graduation from two specific predecessor courses (University of Sussex Graduate Mental Health Practitioner and University of Central Lancashire Associate Psychological Practitioner) where the graduate has also undertaken the certificated HEE/NHSE approved conversion programme (at Sussex, UClan or Edgehill).
- Have six months’ experience working in the Specified System of Practice; clearly identified service for adults (including older adults) with severe mental health problems. This can include time spent as a MHWP trainee once you start direct patient contact.
- Be accountable for your professional practice to a senior member of your service.*
- You must agree to a sustained commitment to the theory and practice of MHWP working.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the therapeutic relationship, including competence in its development, maintenance, and ending, through a Supervisor’s Report.
- Adhere to the BABCP Standards of Conduct, Performance, and Ethics.
- Provide a minimum of 50% of clinical time per week in CBT-informed clinical practice with patients aged 16+ in a clearly identified service for adults (including older adults) with severe mental health problems, including assessment and 1:1 treatment, groups, or cCBT. This must include live interventions (e.g. telephone, video, or face-to-face). When MHWPs are working in senior MHWP roles, they are expected to continue to meet clinical competence by delivering a minimum of two hours per week of psychological interventions.
*If you are currently out of practice, refer to our Return to Practice information to register as a Wellbeing Practitioner. If you are a recent MHWP graduate seeking employment, ask your most recent placement clinical skills supervisor to complete your professional reference.
Please be aware you will need to be in current practice and meeting the above criteria at the point of registration (not just at the point of application).

Registration Fees
These are separate to your annual BABCP Membership Fees
- BABCP members: £45 initial registration. Renewal: £15 per year.
- Previous BABCP-accredited PWPs (pre-2021): Free registration review, but you must still be a BABCP member.

Pre-application checklist
- Certificate of training
- You will need to demonstrate that you have completed appropriate training by uploading a copy of an official academic transcript or certificate to your online application.
- This document must include your name, course title, bear the training institution stamp/seal and show you have successfully completed the course (post exam board ratification).
