Information for trainees

If you are a Course Director, please click on ‘Course Accreditation’ from the sidebar.

Accredited Courses

There are two levels at which BABCP accredits courses providing CBT training: Graduates of Level 1 courses will have met some of the Minimum Training Standards (MTS) – the criteria for practitioner accreditation – whereas Graduates of Level 2 courses will have met all of the MTS.

You may undertake either a Level 1 or a Level 2 course. You don’t need to do both.

BABCP Level 2 Accredited Courses (Including NHS TT Courses)

A level 2 course provides all the necessary training so that on graduation from Level 2 courses, individuals will have received the training required to fulfil all of the BABCP’s Minimum Training Standards (MTS).

Level 2 course graduates do not need to be in clinical practice at the time of application as they can apply as soon as they have successfully completed their course and the University has informed BABCP they have passed. However, it is expected that they are intending to start an appropriately supervised CBT practice in accordance with the BABCP Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics within six months of their application.

A list of CBT courses that have successfully achieved level 2 accreditation can be found here:

BABCP Level 2 Accredited Courses

BABCP Level 1 Accredited Courses

All level 1 accredited courses will meet the BABCP’s quality of training criteria ie. the quality of the training delivered and CBT qualifications of the trainers.

The amount of the MTS met by level 1 accredited courses will vary from course to course. Examples of the area of variation include quantity of teaching hours, case studies, and clinical practice hours required.

This means that graduates of Level 1 courses will have met some but not all of the MTS. When a graduate from a level 1 course applies for accreditation, we will know (according to the specific course undertaken) which components of the MTS have been completed. The applicant will then need to provide additional evidence to demonstrate meeting the remaining criteria.

On application, these applicants will also need to declare their commitment to CBT practice, receiving appropriate CBT supervision of this work, and engagement in appropriate CBT CPD and that they will adhere to the BABCP Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics.

Complaints about BABCP Accredited courses

If you have concerns about any of our accredited courses, we recommend raising them directly with the education provider in the first instance.

As part of our course accreditation process, we ensure that educational providers have a system in place to review and address concerns, and this approach is typically the most effective way to achieve a prompt resolution for everyone involved.

The process

  • Initially, raise your concern with your course tutor or course leader.
  • If this is not appropriate or the issue remains unresolved, refer to your course handbook for guidance on escalating the matter to a higher departmental level.
  • If you are still dissatisfied with the response, you may submit a formal complaint through the education provider’s official procedures.

If you are a student or trainee dissatisfied with the outcome of an internal complaints process, we cannot intervene to overturn or alter the education provider’s decision. Our role is limited to reviewing how programmes continue to meet our standards.

If your concern is related to the course tutor, you should initially raise this with the educational provider and follow their local complaints procedure.

We hold all of our members to the highest professional standards, which they commit to by adhering to our Standards of Conduct, Performance, and Ethics.

If you have a concern or a complaint about a BABCP member, we have a clear complaint process in place, which deals with concerns about our members. You can seek further guidance here.
