Accreditation for Clinical Psychologists and providing evidence of CBT training

To become accredited as a Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist you must meet all our Minimum Training Standards (MTS) and cover the content in our Core Curriculum.

BABCP Level 2 accredited DClinPsy programme graduates – you will have completed all of MTS and you should complete a Level 2 Accreditation.

BABCP Level 1 accredited DClinPsy programme graduates – you will have completed a specific amount of the MTS – please complete the Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist Accreditation form using the guidance provided in the Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist Accreditation Application Guidelines. 

Graduates of other BPS accredited DClin Psy programmes – you can apply for BABCP accreditation using the I’ve completed a non-accredited course page. Before applying, please read the below information on this page carefully as it will help you with your application. 

Recognition of CBT training from BPS accredited DClin Psy programmes

If you are applying for accreditation as a graduate of DClinPsy programme which is accredited with BPS but not with us, we will recognise, without detailed evidence, that you have received at least:

• 100 taught CBT hours
• A pass grade on two CBT case studies

Why we make this recognition

Standards of Proficiency for Clinical Psychologists set out within the BPS accreditation criteria require CBT teaching and practice as a substantial part of their training. You can find more information on this. You can find more information on this BPS webpage.

This means that, although the amount of CBT taught on different DClinPsy programmes varies, all qualified Clinical Psychologists who have completed a BPS Accredited Programme will have met some or all of our Minimum Training Standards. 

HCPC Equivalence without completing a BPS course

If you have completed a DClinPsy programme which is not BPS accredited you will need to provide detailed evidence of all your training as described in the Guidelines for Accreditation as a Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist and disregard the guidance below.

This is because the HCPC statement of equivalence for Clinical Psychologists does not clearly stipulate the same criteria for CBT specific teaching and practice as the BPS course curriculum. We cannot therefore assume that you have completed 100 hours of CBT teaching and two CBT case studies. 

What this means for your Accreditation application

We will accept your DClinPsy certificate as evidence of completing 100 hours of CBT-taught content and two passed CBT case studies without further detailed evidence. 

However, it is important to bear in mind that if you use your DClinPsy as evidence of more than 100 CBT taught hours and/or more than two case studies, you must provide detailed evidence of all your training as described in the Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist Accreditation Guidelines.
