The Women’s Equality and Gender Diversity (WOMGEND) SIG focuses on raising awareness, supporting inclusion, and promoting equality within CBT practice and the workplace.
Focus areas
- Provide high-quality training that raises awareness of the specific challenges faced by women and gender minorities affecting their psychological well-being.
- Offer support and training that equips members with the competencies to deliver inclusive and effective care.
- Create a safe space for exploring and discussing gender-related issues.
- Promote equality of opportunity for women and gender minorities in the workplace.
- Recognise the impact of structural racism on women of colour and raise awareness of its effect on equality in the organisation.
- Build supportive workplace environments for women and gender minorities.
- Provide training to overcome barriers to leadership for women and gender minorities.
- Raise awareness of discriminatory practices against women and gender minorities.
- Provide training to support the needs of women and gender minorities in the workplace.
- Promote career development for women and gender minorities in research, training, and clinical settings.
- Empower women and gender minorities to contribute to CBT research and practice.
- Develop professional networks that improve patient care for women and gender minorities.
- Raise awareness of factors shaping gender differences in psychological disorders.
- Promote visibility and celebrate the achievements of women and gender minorities.
Achievements of the SIG
- Helped BABCP sign up to the White Ribbon Campaign, encouraging men in the organisation to reflect on their role in combating misogyny and violence.
- Contributed to key BABCP documents, including the Draft Strategic Plan, Minimum Training Standards, and EDI guidelines.
- Work with the BABCP Equality & Culture SIG to host joint CPD events.
- Participated in the BABCP EDI Audit, offering feedback and recommendations.
- A SIG representative serves on the EDI Working Group Committee.
- Contributed to an Equality and Diversity resource directory for all protected characteristics.
- Committee members wrote CBT Today articles on VAWG and men’s engagement.
- Webinar with E&C SIG featuring Professor Gina Rippon on gender bias in CBT.
- Hosted various training events, including workshops on gender and mental health.
- Released a press statement and resources on domestic violence.
- Produced provisional EDI Guidelines for conference presenters.
- In 2020, SIG co-founder Patricia Murphy received the Engagement & Involvement Award.
- Members have reviewed papers for the Cognitive Behaviour Therapist Journal.

In 2018 a small group of women founded the BABCP’s Women and Gender Minorities Equality SIG (‘WOMGENE’ for short). The name was changed in 2022 to Women’s Equality and Gender Diversity SIG.
