What Is T.E.A.M. CBT?
T.E.A.M. CBT was developed by Dr. David Burns, an Emeritus Adjunct Professor of Clinical Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. Early in his career, Dr. Burns worked closely with the late Dr. Aaron Beck, the founder of CBT, and authored the widely acclaimed self-help book Feeling Good.
Through decades of research, Dr. Burns created T.E.A.M. CBT – an evidence-based framework designed to provide therapists with tools for delivering effective treatments for mood disorders, relationship challenges, habits, and addictions.
Why T.E.A.M. CBT?
T.E.A.M. CBT integrates methods from various therapeutic approaches. This emphasis on “tools, not schools” ensures flexibility across a wide range of client needs.
The Four Components of T.E.A.M. CBT
- T – Testing
Regular mood surveys and feedback questionnaires are used to gather accurate data, guiding therapy and tracking client progress. - E – Empathy
Empathy is key to successful therapy. T.E.A.M. CBT provides therapists with strategies to improve and convey genuine understanding and support. - A – Agenda Setting
Addressing client resistance is a cornerstone of T.E.A.M. CBT. By identifying and overcoming resistance, therapists can create a clear, collaborative path toward positive change. - M – Methods
Drawing from a range of therapeutic techniques, T.E.A.M. CBT gives therapists effective and rapid interventions that can complement their existing practices.
