Towards Inclusive Workforce: Investigating Inequalities in Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner Careers

Faithful Odusote

Background

Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners (PWPs) play a vital role in delivering accessible, evidence-based mental health care through NHS Talking Therapies services. While this initiative has helped expand access to psychological support across England, there is growing concern that it has not adequately addressed the inequalities experienced by PWPs from Global Majority backgrounds (formerly referred to as Black, Asian and minoritised ethnic communities). Emerging reports suggest that many PWPs encounter barriers related to discrimination, limited access to support, unclear progression pathways, and a lack of transparency around academic and professional appeals processes. These systemic challenges may affect their training experience, job satisfaction, and career development, yet they remain under-researched.

Aims

This study aims to explore the academic and clinical experiences of trainee and qualified PWPs, with a particular focus on understanding the inequalities faced by PWPs from Global Majority backgrounds in England, to develop evidence-based recommendations and a practical toolkit to support these practitioners.

Methods/Design

The study will take a mixed-methods approach, ensuring we capture both a broad range of perspectives and depth of understanding. We will conduct a confidential, online survey distributed to trainee and qualified PWPs at a range of universities across England. The survey will collect demographic information including age, gender, ethnicity, and current PWP status (e.g., trainee or qualified), as well as exploring participants’ recruitment experiences, academic support, awareness and use of appeals, perceived fairness, experiences of discrimination, and career progression.

For those interested, they can provide their contact details to take part in a semi-structured interview or focus groups to explore the above-mentioned themes in greater depth.

Results

This project aims to gather in-depth insights from PWPs, specifically from Global Majority backgrounds, to better understand the systemic, academic, and clinical challenges they face. By identifying barriers—particularly focusing on processes such as appeals—it will capture insights that will directly inform the development of a practical, user-friendly toolkit. This resource aims to support trainee PWPs in navigating academic procedures, promote equitable understanding of the processes, and enhance trainee retention and satisfaction. Ultimately, the project aims to provide recommendations and a toolkit to act as a resource towards a more inclusive and supportive training and professional environment for all PWPs.
