Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT-ED) has the strongest evidence in working with adults with eating disorders. However, its utility with anorexia nervosa is limited by the recommended length of the intervention, with 40 sessions of CBT-E being a conventional dosage. That duration, and service organisation issues, mean that many patients find it difficult or impossible to access effective CBT for anorexia nervosa. This has led to the development of a CBT-ED protocol for treating mild-moderate cased of anorexia nervosa using 20 weekly sessions – CBT-AN-20. This new protocol is based on principles of CBT for anxiety disorders and employs many parallel skills in addressing eating concerns/behaviours and body image. It is designed for adults and older adolescents, and includes adaptations for those with ARFID, neurodivergence and atypical anorexia nervosa.
This one-day training will briefly address the rationale and evidence for CBT-AN-20. It will then consider the specific meta-competences needed to deliver the therapy in a way that is flexible to the individual patient. The majority of the training will focus on the CBT skills needed to work with anorexia nervosa, with a strong focus on conventional CBT skills (e.g., exposure, behavioural experiments, emotional work, Socratic reasoning, etc.). Case material and role-plays will be used to illustrate specific clinical work within CBT-AN-20 (e.g., working with the anorexic voice; body image work; formulation).
1. Knowledge of the principles and evidence for CBT-AN-20.
2. Awareness of the CBT skills that underpin this model for working with mild-moderate anorexia nervosa in a brief format.
3. Ability to deliver CBT-AN-20 flexibly in routine clinical settings, adapting the therapy to the individual patient’s needs and background.
