This two-day workshop presents a structured, evidence-informed approach to working with infidelity and interpersonal betrayal in couple relationships. Drawing on cognitive-behavioural principles and established models of relationship recovery, it provides clinicians with a clear framework for assessment, formulation, and intervention.
Interpersonal betrayal often presents with intense emotional distress, instability, and disruptions in trust and communication. This workshop explores how to work effectively with both partners while maintaining therapeutic neutrality, safety, and focus. Participants will deepen their understanding of the differing psychological experiences of injured and participating partners, and how these unfold across therapy.
A staged model of intervention is introduced, guiding clinicians through stabilisation, meaning-making, and moving forward. Attendees will learn how to support couples in managing emotional fallout, facilitating constructive dialogue, developing a shared understanding of contributing factors, and making informed decisions about the future of the relationship.
The workshop is practice-focused, incorporating case material and structured exercises to develop skills in managing emotional intensity, facilitating communication, and navigating common therapeutic challenges such as blame, ambivalence, and in-session ruptures.
Overall, the training aims to enhance clinicians’ confidence and competence in working with one of the most complex areas of couple therapy, offering a clear and adaptable framework for clinical practice.
The content is pitched at an intermediate level. While the model and interventions are structured and clearly presented, the workshop assumes a working knowledge of core therapeutic skills such as formulation, emotional regulation, and managing the therapeutic relationship.
• Develop CBT-informed formulations of infidelity and interpersonal betrayal that account for the psychological impact on both partners and the factors maintaining distress.
• Conduct focused assessments that balance the need for crisis containment with a broader understanding of relational and contextual influences.
• Apply a staged model of intervention that consists of stabilisation, meaning-making, and moving forward, to guide therapeutic work with couples experiencing betrayal.
• Use core CBT techniques, such as guided discovery, behavioural strategies, and communication skills training, to support emotional regulation, constructive dialogue, and decision-making.
• Recognise and manage common therapeutic challenges, including high emotional arousal, blame, ambivalence, and in-session ruptures, while maintaining a balanced and collaborative stance.
• Support clients in making informed decisions about the future of their relationship, including rebuilding trust or separating in a considered and respectful way.
• Adapt assessment, formulation, and intervention to work sensitively and effectively with clients from diverse backgrounds, including consideration of cultural values, belief systems, relationship norms, and experiences related to protected characteristics, ensuring inclusive and equitable care.
