Knowledge, Skills & Attitudes

We welcome applications for BABCP Accreditation from people with a wide range of backgrounds and experiences.

If you don’t have a Core Profession, you can still apply by completing a Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes (KSA) Portfolio. This involves providing evidence that you have equivalent training and experience in mental health or related fields.

What training do I need?

You must have a minimum of four years of relevant training. This includes:

  • Your core professional training (or KSA equivalent), plus
  • The duration of your CBT training course.

Please note: Degrees in unrelated subjects cannot be counted toward this total.

Applying for Accreditation

Whether you are applying via a Core Profession or the KSA route, you must apply for Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist Accreditation to become accredited.

Full and Condensed KSA Portfolios

The KSA portfolio has a number of criteria which demonstrate training and experience in a mental health or related background which must be met by every applicant. Depending on your profession, you may already meet some of these criteria and be eligible to submit a condensed KSA portfolio:

Assessment and Fees

  • Your KSA portfolio will be assessed alongside your accreditation application.
  • If your KSA has already been assessed during an accredited CBT course, you do not need to resubmit it.
  • Please check our Accreditation Fees page for full details.
  • Everyone pays the CBT Accreditation fee.
  • If we assess your KSA Portfolio, an additional fee also applies.

KSAs with unsuccessful applications

If your application is withdrawn at triage or initial stages and not fully assessed (including where a fee has been partially refunded) we will not review your KSA.

If your application for accreditation is fully assessed, we consider both the application and the KSA portfolio. If your application doesn’t yet meet our standards, but your portfolio does, we issue a KSA Pass Verification letter which is valid for any future application for accreditation. If you re-apply for accreditation, you should submit this letter alongside your application. You should pay the Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist Accreditation application fee, but will not need to resubmit the KSA portfolio or pay the KSA fee again.
