On 18 December 2025, NHS England published the findings of the Operational and delivery review of NHS adult gender dysphoria clinics in England, chaired by Dr David Levy.
Commenting on the review, BABCP Senior Clinical Advisor Helen Macdonald said: “We welcome the publication of findings of the review and its aim to identify areas for improvement.
“We particularly welcome the recommendation that NHS England should work with Gender Dysphoria Clinics (GDCs) and others to enable patients to access appropriate local services, including mental health support, while awaiting their first appointment.
“Evidence from studies in the UK and overseas suggests that trans, non-binary and intersex people (TN-B/I people) are statistically at a higher risk of developing common mental health problems and have a higher rate of suicide and self-harm, and therefore timely access to mental health support while waiting for an assessment – which can take years- could notably improve their mental health and potentially save lives.”
