About Wellbeing Practitioner Registration

About Wellbeing Practitioner Registration

BABCP promotes the safe and effective delivery of CBT principles and therapy skills. Wellbeing Practitioners are specially trained to work with people who have common mental health problems such as anxiety disorders and depression, to support them in managing their recovery through CBT based interventions and guided self-help.

Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner (PWP), Children’s Wellbeing Practitioner (CWP) and Education Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP) registration is currently for those applicants who have graduated from a British Psychological Society (BPS) Accredited or Higher Education England (HEE) Approved Wellbeing training course or apprenticeship and have gained the relevant assessment and treatment skills under supervision.

To find out if you have completed an appropriate training course please refer to the webpage specific to your registration type.

What is Registration and who is it for?

We hold a register of individual Wellbeing Practitioners who commit to maintaining high quality standards in clinical practice, supervision and continuing professional development, and to adhering to our Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics.

Our registrants must also be working within a specified system of care relevant to their role that ensures the right pathways of care and good clinical governance.

Registrants will be listed on the Wellbeing Practitioner section of the public CBT Register UK & Ireland. This includes PWP, CWP and EMHP members. The listing will display your name, region, and BABCP membership number.

Why do Wellbeing Practitioners have to be Registered?

NHS England and NHS Improvement have directed that all Wellbeing Practitioners should be registered with either the BABCP or BPS. The aim of the Register is to protect the public, employers and other agencies by helping them find practitioners who have met our required standards. This provides assurance that employers and practitioners are adhering to the national competency framework and that practitioners are practicing safely within their role and specified system of care.

Professional recognition - Registration also provides recognition of the Wellbeing Practitioner role, bringing it in line with all other healthcare roles that require professional registration. It ensures suitable Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and supervision is available to maintain model fidelity and meet the specific needs of Wellbeing Practitioners.

Why Register with BABCP?

Our Register of Wellbeing Practitioners is the first step in a range of new developments to formally recognise practitioners delivering cognitive behavioural informed interventions.

We have collaborated in supporting the development of IAPT services in England since they began and have played an active role in raising the profile of Wellbeing Practitioners. This was initially launched for PWPs in July 2021, and expanded to include CWPs and EMHPs in April 2023.

We offer CPD and an active Low Intensity Practice Special Interest Group. In addition to the Register of Wellbeing Practitioners, we are committed to representing and supporting this dynamic workforce which has been developing for over ten years.

Our ambition is to continue to develop an active community of groups using CBT-informed approaches across the United Kingdom. We aim to expand our recognition of these emerging professions, which are revolutionising our approach to the delivery of psychological therapies in a number of specialist areas.

Raising and promoting standards across the workforces protects the public by promoting effective and competent practice. Working in partnership with our members, we are passionate about supporting and representing workforces using CBT-informed approaches.
