The NHS Talking Therapies Positive Practice Guide: Older People (2024) has been produced by BABCP, Age UK, the Mental Health Foundation, as well as NHS Talking Therapies services to provide a resource to therapists who work with older people.
The Guide recognises that older people are a heterogenous group with different identities, needs and experiences of ageing. It is hoped that publication of this Guide addresses the diverse needs of older people, as well as dismantling a number of myths and misconceptions which may have prevented them from receiving access to psychological therapies.
It provides numerous examples of actions which services and practitioners can take to improve the access of older people to psychological therapies, with contemporary information and practice suggestions to enhance their practice with older people.
The Positive Practice Guide can also be used by services to implement service reviews or make reasonable adjustments to improve access for older people.
