Synopsis
This workshop is an introduction to the theory and practice of Compassion Focused Therapy. This is the first event in a two-part series. It is designed for beginners and will provide an introduction to the model. Each day can be attended separately and they are suitable for all clinicians, including PWP’s. Part two - Compassion Focused Therapy Chairwork, will take place on Friday 25 April and can be booked separately here
Compassion focused therapy is an integrative and transdiagnostic approach, that draws on evolutionary science, social and developmental psychology, affective neuroscience, and insights from contemplative traditions. The model was originally developed for people with chronic shame and problematic self-criticism, and has an evidence base with a variety of client groups and presentations.
The workshop will introduce the approach’s evolutionary framework to formulate, and depathologize, common mental health difficulties. Participants will also explore the CFT’s affect-regulation model, which emphasises the importance of soothing and safeness and the role of attachment and care.
The workshop will include practices that cultivate compassion in its various flows: from self-to-self, self-to-others, and others-to-self. This will include breathing and body-focused exercises, imagery practices, and letter writing. Common fears, blocks and resistances to compassion will also be explored and conceptualised.
At the end of the training, practitioners will:
-Understand key principles and processes of compassion focused therapy
-Have an experience of core CFT exercises and understand their place in a course of treatment
-Be able to explain the role of attachment and soothing on emotional regulation
-Be able to formulate and understand fears, blocks and resistance to compassion
-Be able to modify and adapt compassionate mind training for various populations and presentations
