Synopsis
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) has become one of the most prominent forms of psychotherapy worldwide. In the United Kingdom, it is the primary therapeutic approach utilised within NHS Talking Therapy Services, as well as across secondary care and independent therapy services. In CBT training programs and Clinical and Counselling Psychology doctoral courses, trainees are instructed and assessed on their clinical proficiency with clients.
A key instrument in CBT practice, supervision, and certification is the Cognitive Therapy Scale-Revised (CTSR) (Blackburn et al., 2000). This scale consists of 12 components designed to evaluate various aspects of proficient therapy delivery, all of which a clinician must demonstrate during each session. The CTSR is known for its high internal consistency and responsiveness to improvements in competence through training, proving to be an invaluable tool for both supervision and clinical practice.
As outlined in the BABCP Minimum Training Standards, individuals seeking accreditation must present evidence of three "closely supervised" cases, during which supervisors may observe live sessions or review recorded sessions using a validated CBT skills assessment scale, such as the CTSR, as a framework for feedback. Accredited clinicians are also expected to present "live" case material for supervision at least twice annually, making the CTSR an integral part of the ongoing professional development of an effective CBT practitioner.
The training provided will enable clinicians to gain deeper insight into the CTSR as a measurement tool, understand its marking structure, and have the opportunity to evaluate a "live" session recording.
This workshop is designed for qualified CBT practitioners who wish to further their understanding and practice of using the CTSR, with the support of an experienced trainer and fellow professionals. It is particularly suited to those new to supervising trainees who are integrating CBT into their clinical practice.
