Synopsis

Medical illness and in particular long term health conditions (LTCs), defined as conditions that cannot, at present, be cured but can be controlled by medication and/or other treatment or therapies (UK Department of Health 2012), impose significant physical and psychosocial burdens: around 15 million people in the UK have one or more LTC (Naylor et al 2012). Someone living with a long-term condition is 2-3 times more likely to experience a mental health problem. This is particularly the case for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and musculoskeletal disorders, and there is also an increased prevalence in people living with asthma, cancer and HIV/AIDs (Naylor et al 2012). Each condition presents its own challenges, but it is possible to identify processes of appraisal and coping that are associated with better or poorer adjustment.

This workshop will present a cognitive behavioural model, originally developed for people with cancer, which is applicable to acute and chronic medical conditions. Adaptations of CBT including engaging patients, modifying behavioural interventions, working with realistic negative thoughts and managing our own emotional reactions will be presented with opportunities for role play practice to develop skills in this area.

This in-person workshop will give participants the opportunity to work in small groups to develop case concepts, participate in role-playing scenarios involving clients with physical illnesses, and reflect on their own emotional responses to individuals facing serious physical health challenges.

We hope you will join us in Bristol to gain a better understanding of CBT theory and applications to practice for Medical Health Conditions.

Learning outcomes:

1. Understanding how a transdiagnostic cognitive model can be applied across acute and chronic medical conditions.

2. Recognition and reflection on some of our own emotional reactions to people with physical illness, particularly our reaction to people facing life-threatening situations.

3. Being able to use a 3 part model to select cognitive interventions for negative thoughts in realistically negative situations
