This training is primarily about helping to treat veterans who are presenting with moral injury. Moral injury, whilst not a formal diagnostic category, has gained increasing interest in recent years as a pathway for the development of significant distress, which can result in the development of maladaptive coping strategies intended to escape, control, and avoid moral pain that contributes to mental health difficulties.
Moral injury refers to the psychological distress that results from actions, or the lack of them, which violate one's moral or ethical code. It is commonly observed in individuals exposed to war, trauma, or other morally challenging situations, such as healthcare workers during a pandemic. Traditional mental health treatments, including CBT and ACT, are being explored as potential interventions for moral injury.
ACT offers a different approach to treating moral injury by encouraging individuals to accept their traumatic experiences and the difficult emotions that accompany them, rather than trying to change or suppress them. This therapy focuses on helping individuals live according to their values despite the psychological pain they may experience.
Through participation in this workshop, you will gain an understanding of moral injury and its importance in clinical practice, learn how it relates to PTSD, and develop a toolkit of ACT techniques to work with moral pain. The workshop will be highly interactive, involving a variety of methods including didactic teaching, experiential exercises and group work. This workshop is primarily aimed at CBT therapists working with veterans. Interested Wellbeing Practitioners will be able to apply some learning when working with moral pain.
Through participation in this workshop, you will:
• Gain an understanding of moral injury and its importance in clinical practice.
• Understand how moral injury relates to, and is distinct from, PTSD and its implications for treatment.
• Understand the key concepts of ACT’s psychological flexibility model and how these can be used to conceptualise and intervene in the maintenance of moral injury
• Develop a toolkit of ACT techniques to work with moral pain
• Help clients connect with present moment experiences and clarify their values with a view to enacting purposeful behavioural change.
