Emotional dysregulation is a transdiagnostic factor across many mental health difficulties. It is also a primary concern in presentations associated with trauma, attachment disturbances, and personality disorders. Maladaptive efforts to gain emotional control are often the target of psychotherapies, including CBT.
Emotional regulation is an implicit or explicit aim in many therapeutic approaches. Within CBT, there is an explicit focus on emotional regulation training in modalities such as DBT and disorder-specific treatments, such as CBT for eating disorders (CBT-ED). Integrating emotional regulation strategies into treatment has also been shown to enhance the effects of standard CBT (Berking et al., 2013).
Chairwork is a collection of experiential methods that use space, movement, and dialogue to bring about change. Chairwork is a core intervention in various CBT-related modalities such as schema therapy and compassion-focused therapy, and has a long history in both cognitive and behavioural approaches. A recent meta-analysis (Pascual-Leone & Baher, 2023) found that incorporating Chairwork into treatment can bolster therapeutic outcomes, and that the method is effective as a standalone intervention. Chairwork is renowned for its ability to support emotional activation, expression, and processing. It has also been shown to address factors that are associated with reduced distress, including metacognitive awareness, self-compassion, and self-distancing.
This clinically-focused webinar will outline various Chairwork approaches to support emotional regulation. This will include procedures to process threat emotions, overcome emotional blocks, and support self-soothing via self-compassion. Each method will be broken down into concrete steps and then demonstrated by the trainers.
By the end of the webinar, attendees will:
1. Be able to explain the core principles and processes of Chairwork and their relevance to CBT.
2. Understand how Chairwork can be used to support emotional regulation.
3. Have observed various Chairwork methods being modelled.
4. Have practical ideas for how they can integrate Chairwork into their clinical work.
