Synopsis
Therapists can benefit from participating in training events that aim to improve their skills in working with clients from diverse cultural backgrounds. However, such skills can be further developed and strengthened through the support of supervision. This workshop uses the core skills and frameworks that supervisors already possess, and will provide an opportunity to explore how these can be adapted to support cross-cultural work. Supervisees may be at different stages in terms of developing skills and their interest in working with these principles, this workshop will help supervisors understand where supervisees are in their development and enable them to provide a supportive working relationship to aid the growth of these skills.

The workshop will provide practical skills in working with supervisees who may be reluctant to think about diversity and difference, as well as a framework for ensuring cultural humility in the supervisory process. Additionally, we will address the specific needs that ethnically diverse supervisees may have and how supervisors can best support them
.

Learning outcomes

1. Using contracts to establish the way that diversity can become a key part of supervision

2. Adapting key supervisory skills and approaches to cross cultural working

3. Understanding and working with supervisee reluctance to engage with these ideas

4. Understanding how to best support ethnically diverse supervisees
