There is substantial evidence that effective learning involves
experiential elements alongside reflection. This has long been recognised
in CBT, where the use of behavioural experiments is considered important,
if not essential, in ensuring learning at
both a ‘heart’ and ‘head’ level. These principles of learning apply as
much in clinical supervision as they do in therapy, and yet experiential methods
are used infrequently in supervision, case discussion seems to be
the dominant method.
This workshop is suitable for both new and seasoned
supervisors who wish to make their supervision more experiential. It
will help participants increase the frequency and quality of the use
of experiential methods in their own supervision, as well as providing
a chance to reflect on personal barriers to their use. The workshop will
look at the range of experiential methods available and the compelling
rationale for their use, before going on to identify some possible reasons
why they are often underused.
Three main approaches to making supervision more experiential will be
1. Contracting at the start of supervision
2. Agenda setting in each session
3. Spontaneous use of active methods within sessions
This will be through extensive use of demonstrations from the workshop
leaders, small group practice, and discussion as a large group. Active
participation is expected from all workshop participants.
1. To identify and discuss the benefits of using experiential methods in
2. To practice using experiential methods to enhance learning in supervision
