Self-Regulation CBT for Depression

Presented by Dr Stephen Barton

About the event

This is an online, participative event on the Zoom meeting platform, organised by the North East & Cumbria Branch.  The event will not be recorded.

A certificate of attendance will be issued for 6 x hours CPD - 50/50 skills and theory.

The introductory training is a 1-day workshop for therapists and supervisors working with depression, particularly complex cases and/or clients who have not benefitted from standard forms of CBT.  Those attending are invited to reflect on a depressed client from their past or current caseload, including those who have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.  The workshop blends teaching, guidance, demonstration, case reflection and discussion.

Self-Regulation CBT (SR-CBT) has been developed over several years with the involvement of patients with complex difficulties.  Compared with standard CBT, SR-CBT places more emphasis on self-identity, motivation and life-goals.  It also aims to improve clients’ self-regulation skills.  For example:

•         Paying more attention to needs, desires and positive feelings

•         Learning to engage in activity (not just doing more)

•         Exploring new ways of thinking (not just having accurate thoughts)

•         Trying to influence preferred outcomes in situations (living powerfully)

•         Overcoming traumatic experiences (when applicable)

•         Reflecting on the true self and setting true self goals

Aims and Objectives

1. Introduce the self-regulation model
2. Observe case illustrations (video demonstrations)
3. Introduce the main treatment components
4. Formulate a case within the SR model
