Extended Foundation Skills in Schema Therapy

Presented by Saskia Ohlin and Ruth McCutcheon

About the event

This is an online, participative event on the Zoom meeting platform, organised by the Schema Special Interest Group (SIG).  The event will not be recorded.

A certificate of attendance will be issued for 5 x hours CPD - 3hrs skills and 2hrs theory.

Schema Therapy (ST) has been proven to help people with more ingrained and long term psychological difficulties and personality disorders. Newton-Howes et al. (2014) found that comorbid personality disorder associated with depression had significantly poorer outcome than depression alone. It may be therefore useful for CBT therapists dealing with common mental help problems such as depression to incorporate elements of Schema therapy in their practice to tackle any underlying issues related to personality difficulties. Newton-Howes G, Tyrer P, Johnson T, Mulder R, Kool S, Dekker J, et al. Influence of personality on the outcome of treatment in depression: systematic review and meta-analysis. J Pers Disord. 2014;28:577–93.

This workshop is aimed at clinicians who are looking to develop foundation skills in the Schema Therapy model. The workshop will aim to equip clinicians with a foundation knowledge of Schema theory and provide a useful conceptual framework for working with complex clinical cases.  Experiential exercises will be used to demonstrate some of the key techniques in the application of Schema Therapy, including limited reparenting, empathic confrontation, imagery and chair work throughout the workshop.

This will be an experiential and interactive workshop.  There will be breakout rooms available for participants to practice ST techniques and receive constructive feedback.
