The BABCP Core Curriculum aims to specify the curriculum content of the CBT training which all therapists must successfully undertake in order to become eligible for BABCP Accreditation as a Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist. CBT includes a diverse range of therapies, based on behavioural and cognitive theories and evidence-based practice. The field is developing and continues to expand including developing culturally sensitive and adapted CBT.
Behaviour therapists and cognitive therapists each tend to engage in similar interventions, but use a different rationale. These differences have been taken into account when developing the curriculum. BABCP remains inclusive to therapists and training providers who identify themselves specifically as behavioural therapists, cognitive therapists or cognitive-behavioural therapists.
To meet BABCP’s Minimum Training Standards (MTS), at least 180 hours of the expected 200 CBT-specific training should include the key areas of this core curriculum.
All therapists are expected to develop and demonstrate 100 hours direct and structured learning in a specified core set of competences, including competence in working with diversity. These are outlined in part A of the BABCP curriculum. Part A focuses primarily on the science, theory, and practice of CBT with common mental health disorders that are suitable for meeting the requirements of the directed study in theory and skills stipulated in the MTS.
Part B provides a list of applied cognitive and behavioural specialisms that are suitable for meeting the requirements of the directed study in theory and skills stipulated in the MTS.
