BABCP External Audit of Equality & Diversity Practices

The British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) is the lead organisation for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in the UK and Ireland.

We are pleased to be able to share the recommendations from the external consultancy Diverse Matters, who we commissioned to audit our Equality & Diversity practices early this year.

The three-page summary highlights several areas of positive practice which we are proud of, including the work of the Equality & Culture SIG and WOMGENE SIG, resources for members including the special issue of our journal highlighting work with BAME communities, the BAME Positive Practice Guide, outreach event and related podcast, the Public Engagement Strategy produced in consultation with people with experience of mental health problems, and good consideration of Equality & Diversity issues within our complaints procedures.

The report also outlines several recommendations which we are committed to working towards. We are convening a working group to take action on these recommendations and will be reporting back to the membership regularly on our progress.

We stand against and are committed to challenging and eradicating all forms of discrimination and discriminatory practice, and recognise that systemic discrimination is present universally, including within the psychotherapy profession and our own organisation. We are committed to trying to improve this at all levels of the organisation and membership.
