Message from Dr Roslyn Law, National Lead for IPT in IAPT

Dear Colleagues

As you may be aware, current government directive requires expansion of IAPT services in England to provide a choice of modalities in the treatment of depression and anxiety. One direct consequence of this is the development of a national training programme for Interpersonal Psychotherapy.

While it is assumed that many practitioners will be coming to this form of therapy without prior experience, the co-ordinators are keen that those with prior training and experience are as fully involved in this training programme as possible. It is estimated that more than 2000 therapists have attended IPT training courses around the UK over the last twelve years, however only about 10% of those therapists have registered with the national network, IPTUK. There are many reasons for this, not least that the opportunity to register is relatively new. Recent efforts to increase the numbers of therapist registered, and so informed about development, have led to a significant increase in numbers. However as these efforts have been primarily targeted at IAPT services, the many staff who have completed an IPT course or supervision and work in other areas or outside of the NHS may not be aware of the register or the opportunities which are developing.

The expansion of IPT training to serve IAPT services will create an unprecedented number of training and supervision places for practitioners and for the first time specific training and supervision for IPT supervisors. In addition a core team of IPT trainers and supervisors will be recruited to deliver training and run a network of supervision groups across England. In order to recruit as effectively as possible it is vital that as many therapists as possible who have completed any form of IPT training are registered, and so kept up to date with developments. Registration is free and requires nothing more than to complete a brief registration form.
If you have attended an IPT introductory course and have completed subsequent casework under general or IPT specific supervision we would welcome your involvement. Please complete and return the application form, which can be downloaded here.
